An eight-run first inning against two pitchers proved too much for favored Camden. Six hits and an assort-ment of wild pitches and walks gave the Rams the early cushion and they held on for the win.
 
 
1968
With the formation of the Santa Teresa and West Catholic leagues, eleven league champions competed in the second annual tournament. The teams were divided into four regions.

Dyke Johnson singled in two runs and Don DeSimone knocked in another to pace the Mustangs. Homestead took a 5-0 lead before Santa Cruz got to lefty Steve Lacki for a couple runs. Homestead scored its other two runs on a wild pitch and a balk with the bases loaded.
 
 
1969

Jeff Gingrich, who lost only one game in his final two seasons, blanked Cupertino on four hits. He was staked to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on three singles and then got the two-run cushion in the third on singles by Bob Rasmussen and Bill Adamson. Gingrich struck out five of the final six batters.
 
 
1972
The format was changed with 12 league champions (Christian Schools League joined the field) taking part. The competition was divided in regions.

Kelly Davis pitched a one-hitter and the Bucs scored solo runs in the third and fourth innings. The first tally came on a double by Gordon Hahn 
and a single by his brother, George. Jeff Maxson singled in the next inning, went to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly.
 
 
1973
The format remained the same as the previous year. There were 12 league champions taking part in regional competition.

Campbell scored four runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth and made it stand up for the win behind the clutch pitching of sophomore Steve McGrody. Jim Oswald and Ted Berton each got two hits for the winning Bucs.

The Longhorns scored all their runs in the first three innings and then held off Sunnyvale behind the six-hit pitching of Rick Foley. It was the fourth consecutive title for the West Valley League. Terry Murray crashed a home run for Leigh.
 
 
1975
The format remained the same with 12 league champions competing in four regions. The Fremont League was a new entry but the Christian Schools League dropped out.

Although pitcher Gene Montgomery walked 11, he struck out 14 and the Colts took an easy victory. Johnny Rico and Tim McGrew paced El Camino at the plate while Carney Lansford had 2-for-2 for Wilcox. 
 
 
1976
The format was changed slightly, since only eleven league champions (The Coast Athletic Association dropped out) contested for the title. Competition continued to be divided into regions.

After Santa Cruz scored two runs in the first inning on four errors and no hits, Leigh came back to score six runs on just three hits. Santa Cruz committed seven errors. Rick Corbett got the win for the Longhorns in relief.
 
 
1977
Thirteen league champions took part in the tournament which was divided into regions. The Santa Cruz Coast League was a new entry while the Christian Schools League returned to competition. The De Anza League replaced the Fremont League.

El Camino broke a 5-5 tie in the sixth inning with a three-run uprising. The Colts scored two on a hit bats-man, two walks and a single by Rich Doran. The third run scored on a wild pitch. Jean Donalaya won the game in relief of Rich Bordi.
 
 
1978
The format was changed. In addition to the 13 league champions, three at-large teams were selected for a field of 16, which was divided into regions.

After trailing throughout the game, Independence scored 10 runs in the top of the final inning to prevail. Pitcher Vic Porrovecchio contributed a grand slam homer after Kerry Williams’ bases-loaded double had tied the game at 3-3 earlier in the frame. Soquel’s pitchers had not allowed a run in 13 1/3 innings prior to the rally.

The Padres came from a 3-0 deficit to tie the game, 3-3, in the fifth inning on Neil Vandervort’s three-run home run and then scored the winner in the sixth inning as Dave Spear double home pinch-hitter Greg Bleisner. Sophomore Greg Raynes was the winning pitcher although allowing three runs in the first inning.
 
 
1980
The format was changed with 26 schools -- the champions and runners-up of 13 leagues -- being entered. Regional competition was dropped for the first time.

Russ Smathers, a .167 hitter during the regular season, singled, doubled, homered and drove in three runs to pace Terra Nova. Down to their last strike and trailing by two runs, Prospect tied the score, 7-7, on Harold Sutherland’s bases-loaded single and then won it two batters later on Rob Goddard’s long liner over the left-fielder’s head. JoRay Marrujo was the winning pitcher in relief.

A new format was introduced. The champions and runnersup from 12 leagues (the Mid and South Peninsula leagues combined into the Peninsula League) automatically qualified and eight at-large teams were selected to produce a 32-team field.

Chris Hammett’s two-run double in the top of the eighth inning gave the Bells the winning margin. The game was tied 8-8 after the regulation seven innings, setting up Hammett’s blow. After getting off to a 3-0 lead in the third inning, the Matadors called on their undefeated ace, Ryan Hancock, who struck out 10 and allowed 
only one hit over five innings. A walk, single and sacrifice fly got Monta Vista its first run. In the third, Ryan Pearson tripled and scored on Greg Carlstrom’s single. Carlstrom stole second and scored on two successive groundouts.

Left-hander Dan Serafini pitched his second complete game victory of the tournament to pace the Padres to the title. He beat Salinas on a no-hitter in the second round. The only score Serafini allowed came in the final inning thanks to a two-base error. The winners score five in the second inning and the same number in the sixth frame, adding two more runs in the third inning.

Mitty proved itself up to a challenge by Leland and out-slugged the Chargers. With Brandon Macchi drilling a two-run homer in the third, Mitty took a 6-0 lead into the fifth inning but Leland cut it to 6-4 on Adam Shorsher’s grand-slam. The winning Monarchs, however, came back with five runs in the bottom of the inning, thanks to Zeph Zinsman’s grand slam and held on for the win.

inning, Kevin Boucher squeezed home Greg Baker with the winning run to
complete the Longhorns' sweep of three WCAL teams in the playoffs. Jason
Windsor, the winning pitcher who finished the season 11-1, shut down the
Wildcats 1-2-3 in the final inning, striking out two. Windsor also hit a

Senior Matt Hollywood won his second victory of the playoffs as the ninth-seeded Lancers completed their surprising journey to the title. St.

Vincent Gutierrez hit his first-ever out-of-the-park homer in the first inning as the top-seeded Chargers rolled to an easy win. The winners also got a stellar performance from four-year starter Daniel Romero, who was undefeated this year. After Gutierrez’ two-run homer in the first, Wilcox scored three in the second and two in the third inning. Gutierrez had 5 RBIs.

With Jason Codiroli showing the way on the mound and at the plate, Mitty unseated the defending champion Chargers. Codiroli pitched two-hit baseball for five innings and had three hits, including a bases-clearing triple in the fourth inning. In the third inning, Tyler Duran hit what appeared to be a 360-foot, three-run home run but was called out for missing home plate amidst a mob of celebrating teammates. Duran was credited with a triple and two RBIs.

 Michael Cardinalli pitched and batted the Toreadores to their first-ever CCS baseball title. Cardinalli, scheduled to pitch two innings, pitched five-plus innings, allowing one hit. At one point, he retired 12 in a row. Cardinalli  also knocked in two runs with a double and a sacrifice fly.

 Wilcox, playing in its third straight championship game, rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning. Alan Smith's two-run triple was the blow that put the Chargers ahead. The winners finished the season with 22 straight victories. Jeff Gordon got the victory, allowing six hits including Nate Ford's 370-foot homer, and Donald Brandt picked up the save.

After giving up three runs in the first inning, pitcher Anthony Edwards shut down the Cardinals and his teammates responded with four runs in the third inning and two each in the fourth and fifth. Justin Granato and Ryan Peterson each smacked two-run doubles in the third inning uprising.

The Monarchs finally ended Santa Clara’s unbelievable string of victories over WCAL powerhouses in the playoffs. After scoring one run in the first inning, Mitty struck for seven tallies in the second inning to pretty much wrap it up. Kyle Hansen shut down Santa Clara until the fifth inning when he gave up two runs.

Monterey had to withstand a three-run final inning by Los Gatos to prevail by the one run. Michael Bugary pitched the victory although he needed relief help on the final out of the game with a runner at first base. Mike Brienzo of Los Gatos was the hitting star with two hits including a double.

a wild finish earned the Bells their sixth CCS title in an extra inning affair. With runners at the corners, Eric Johnson broke from first and let himself get caught in a rundown which allowed Mark Canha to break for the plate and the throw was wide, allowing the winning run to score. Bellarmine thought it had won twice in the seventh inning but both celebrations proved to be premature.

Jonathan Hughes and Kevin Miller led the Warriors to their fourth CCS title. Hughes had four hits, including a two-run double, and came on as a relief pitcher in the sixth inning to quell a San Benito threat. Miller pitched a five-hitter in his five innings-plus and hit two doubles as V C atoned for the heart-breaking loss the previous season.

After giving up the early lead, Isaac Wilhelm held the Mariners until the seventh. With two runs in and the tying run at third base, Erik Johnson came in to strike out the final batter. Johnson, whose single had put Los Altos ahead, was making his first relief appearance of the season.

Mitty completed one of the most dominating baseball seasons in Central Coast Section history by walloping Bellarmine in a game called after five innings due to  the mercy rule. The Monarchs wasted no time, scoring four times in the first inning highlighted by Preston Caldera’s two-run triple, added six in the second inning and two more in the third as Brett Fuller homered.  

Starter Alex Balog allowed just one hit and two walks over five innings.

The Panthers scored five runs in the first inning and hung on to stun Palo Alto, ending the Vikings’ 24-game win streak. All the runs in the first inning came with two out. Ryan Bender lined a two-run triple to right-center field and Saamy Phan ripped a two-run double to left-center off starter Scott Witte to highlight the inning. Palo Alto scored four in the bottom of the sixth on home runs by Conor Raftery and Joc Pederson but Burlingame reliever Zach Grotz shut the door.

After a see-saw battle in which the lead changed hands several times, Palo Alto managed to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. B.J. Boyd beat out a grounder and advanced to second on a throwing error. Two batters later, Austin Braff singled to center  and the speedy Boyd scored easily for the win.  Jacob Tonascia had the big blast for San Benito, a two-run homer. The game’s start was delayed two hours due to rain.

After Los Altos squandered several chances to win the title, Monterey punched across the winning run in the eighth inning. Stephen Ventimilia opened the final frame with a double and moved to third on a misplayed bunt attempt. Los Altos intentionally loaded the bases with a walk but a wild throw to the plate on an infield grounder allowed Ventimilia to score.

After his teammates had given him a three-run lead in the first inning, Cameron Stewart pitched a no-hitter as the Warriors won their sixth CCS title. The first inning rally was started by singles from Bryant Park and Bryson Brigman. Nick McGrew hit an RBI single to left and advanced to second as the outfielder bobbled the ball. Catcher Colin Warner followed with a two-run single.  San Benito got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a walk, a two-base error  by Stewart on a pickoff attempt and a groundout. There was no more scoring and Stewart struck out the final two batters in the seventh to claim the victory and no-hitter.

Trailing by two runs in the sixth inning, St. Ignatius racked up four runs to claim its first CCS baseball championship. After scoring two runs to tie the score, 3-3, Kyle Tillinghas cracked an RBI single to put the Wildcats ahead and Jason Lock added a run-scoring double for insurance. Aptos had threatened to put the game away in the fifth inning with the two-run advantage and the bases loaded. Senior Collin Monsour was inserted to pitch and struck out the next two batters. Monsour then pitched two more  innings of scoreless relief to clinch the victory.

The format changed with the addition of an Open Division. As previously, 48 teams were chosen for the playoffs – 40 automatic qualifiers from the eight basic leagues and eight at-large choices. The Open Division consisted of 16 teams – champions, co-champions or tri-champions of the A-rated leagues (there were six A-rated leagues this year), plus others who may opt up or have sufficient CCS points to fill out the field. The remaining 32 schools that qualify were divided into Divisions I and II, based on enrollment. Top-seeded were Leigh (Open Division), Wilcox (Division I) and Pacific Grove (Division II).

The Chargers fell two runs behind in the first inning but tied the score in the second and then won it in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kevin Cance led off the winning rally with a chopper that bounced high over third base and into left field. Liam Saito sacrificed Cance to second, and Josh Wells hit a soft fly ball that dropped into shallow center field, driving in Cance from second base with the decisive run. Josh Nashed, pitching in relief, got the victory.

Andrew Najeeb-Brush drove in the first run and was on the mound for the final nine outs as the Chargers swept to their fifth CCS title. After Najeeb-Brush knocked in the first run, Bradley Wilson’s double an inning later stretched the cushion to 3-0. Westmont responded with two runs in the fourth, on RBI singles from Mike Morbo and Sam Maniglia, but the Warriors could not get closer. Najeeb-Brush ended the game by scooping a ground ball and outrunning the batter to first base.
