Gomez, however, quickly put Watsonville ahead again on a header off a corner kick. Bellarmine finished the season with 26 wins, most in CCS history, against one loss (1-0 to Santa Monica which finished undefeated in the Southern Section). The Bells also had two draws on the season. Palo Alto did a good job bottling up the winners' offense throughout the match but could not mount much of an attack itself. The game was within eight minutes of being a draw and the team being declared co-champions when the goal came. The ball was jostled about on the the ground after a corner kick and Avalos, who only came up from the junior varsity team for the playoffs, nailed it. 2009 DI DII DIII The format changed with the introduction of a third division. Thirty-six teams qualified and were divided into the three divisions, based on enrollment. Four teams in each division drew first round byes. An Alisal player recovered the ball on a deflection, then crossed the ball to Estrada, who hit a header from 10 yards out into the center of the net. Six minutes into the game, junior Tanner Akol made a throw-in on the left side from about the 15-yard line to Chronopoulos, who headed the ball back to Akol for a shot. Irish keeper Marc Cirilo was able to deflect it out and Chronopoulos found himself wide open for the easy put-back. 2011 DIVISION I DIVISION II DIVISION III The format remained the same with 36 teams divided into three divisions, based on enrollent. Bellarmine went up 1-0 just 30 seconds into the game when Michael Escobar scored off an assist from younger brother Matt. Pascal Purro netted the equalizer for Mountain View early in the first half, heading in a corner kick. Bellarmine's Brandon Morales scored off a throw-in from Matt Escobar in the 64th minute, but Riley Hanley tied the score with a free kick in the 77th minute, setting up Longoni's winner. Serra, 1-0 FINALS: Watsonville defeated Menlo-Atherton, 3-1 (March 3 at Gilroy High) Jose Flores' two goals and assist led the third-seeded Wildcatz to the win over the previously undefeated Bears. It was Watsonville's ninth section crown, capping a year in which it won its 32nd league title. Watsonville broke through in the ninth minute after a beautiful combination of passes that led to Flores' first goal, a shot he stabbed in with his right foot from inside the box. The Wildcatz didn't score their second goal until the second half, when sophomore midfielder Alex Cibrian one-touched in a back pass from Flores in the 55th minute. Flores tallied the third goal, in the 59th minute, when he headed down a long ball along the line from junior forward Alvaro Madrigal, cut back in and blasted the ball with his right foot from 15 yards. St. Francis, 2-1 FINALS: 0-0 tie between Willow Glen and San Mateo (March 3 at Gilroy High) In a match featuring great defensive play, the two schools ended up sharing the championship after playing two overtime periods. Willow Glen finished 14-1-8 overall and San Mateo was 18-2-3. Standouts for the winning Rams were junior sweeper Fernando Gomez and sophomore goalkeeper Anthony Macias. North County struck first with a header by Angel Flores in the 29th minute but six minutes later, Sacred Heart netted the equalizer with Rojas putting in close-range shot on a cross from Dashiell MacNamara.
