Brief Written History of CCS Girls Basketball Championships

By Don Nash, 2000

The Central Coast Section girls basketball tournament was inaugurated in 1977.   Through the years, the format has varied and with it the number of teams competing -- ranging from 14 the first year to 76 in 1988, the first year of five-division play. In the earlier years, the leagues were assigned to geographical regions and regional championships were held before the sectional championship.

Three teams -- Sacred Heart Prep in 1993 and 1994 and Mitty in 1999 -- finished the season undefeated. The Sacred Heart team won the state Division V title in 1993 and the Division I title in 1994. Mitty won the Division I title in 1999.

Pinewood holds the team scoring record with 110 scored against Fremont Christian in 1998. Other high scoring games included 107 by Monterey against Mercy of San Francisco in 1990, 104 by Sacred Heart Prep against St. Lawrence in 1997 and 100 by Mitty against Mt. Pleasant in 1999.

The top individual scoring performance is believed to be 41 points by Chris Metzger of Fremont Christian in 1981 against Jefferson in the second round. Piedmont Hills' Kim Conway scored 38 in 1989 against Wilcox in the Division II quarterfinals. That same year, Conway scored 36 in the finals against North Salinas and 34 against Los Gatos in the first round. Metzger also had a 34-point performance against Aragon in 1981. Other outstanding individual scoring efforts were 33 by Amy Touli of Monta Vista against Gunderson in 1989; 31 by Suzy Meckenstock of Los Gatos against Lynbrook in 1982; and 31 by Loren Gualco of Notre Dame-Belmont against St. Ignatius in 1997.
