1999 GIRLS BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT--Official Tournament Brackets
DIVISION III
Championship Game Highlights
by Mark Foyer
Vanessa Valenzuela and Traci Villa each scored four points
in the overtime to lead Notre Dame-Belmont to a 64-60 win over Presentation in overtime in
the Central Coast Section Division III Girls title game.
Trailing by as many as 10 points in the first quarter, the Tigers (22-9) rallied to take
the lead in the third quarter. Presentation rallied, setting the stage for the fourth
quarter. I t appeared that Notre Dame would win in regulation as it had a 53-50 lead with
less then a minute to go. Having committed just one team foul up to that point,
Presentation fouled.
After the sixth team foul, Presentations Katherine McLaughlin stole the inbound
pass, and got the ball to Cheyenne Brown. She proceeded to sink a three-pointer with 27.9
seconds left in regulation to tie the score.
The Tigers had three chances to win the game in regulation. But the shot attempts, two by
Valenzuela and one by Kelly Wetteland, were no good.
Notre Dame took the lead for good at the start of overtime as Villa took a cross-court
pass from Wetteland and scored on a layup.
Sara Werner, who led all scorers with 20 points, scored on a free throw. After an exchange
of baskets, Notre Dame broke away, going on a 7-1 run to break the game open
Wetteland led the Tigers with 18 points, with Villa scoring 14. Both Jakki Flaherty (12
points, 14 rebounds) and Valenzuela (10 points, 12 rebounds) finished with double-double
games.
Werner had 10 rebounds to go with her 20 points. Brown added 16 points, and Katie
Passalacqua chipped in 13.
