2001 BOYS BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS--DIVISION II

Jermel Gilliard scored a career high 28 points, including of 15 points in a span of nearly 3 � minutes to help St. Francis High School defeat Salinas 76-56 in the Boys� Central Coast Section Division II title game. Gilliard started his run by sinking a three-pointer at the end of the third quarter. That hoop gave St. Francis a 51-47 lead. He scored St. Francis� first eight points of the fourth quarter. Gilliard�s brother Hakeem kept the St. Francis streak going, sinking two free throws. After Salinas� Kyle Taylor scored a three-pointer to bring the Cowboys to within 10, Jermel Gilliard scored on a three-pointer as well. The two players exchanged jump shots as well. But after Taylor�s last jump shot, Jermel Gilliard scored another three-pointer to put the game out of reach.

Troy Bienemann scored 17 points and Danny Ackman added 16 points for St. Francis. For Salinas, Nick Davis poured in 20 points and Taylor added 13.  The title is St. Francis� second straight, third in four years and eighth in school history.
