The CCS Board of Managers is proud to announce the immediate opening of the application process of the
JOYCE RIDGWAY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

2010-11

Joyce Ridgway served as a leader in the development of Women's sports in the CCS and CIF from her position as Assistant Commissioner of the Central Coast Section. Due to her tireless determination and dedication to enhancing and expanding the opportunities for girls in sport an annual scholarship is offered to a deserving female senior student-athlete. The student-athlete would exemplify the characteristics of leadership, determination, dedication, self-sacrifice and integrity that is reflective of Joyce Ridgway's character and contributions.

  • The CCS will honor one (1) Central Coast Section female student athlete, as follows:
    • One (1) female  student-athlete will be awarded a $500 scholarship

Thanks to the generosity of Barbara Beard and others, who have contributed funds to recognize a deserving student athlete.

  • The CCS Scholar-Athlete Award Selection Committee (made up of educational professionals from throughout the Section) is seeking applicants whose athletic, school & community service careers have been truly exemplary.  Applicants must possess the following:
    • personal standards and accomplishments which are positive models for others;
    • high levels of integrity, honesty and athletic citizenship; and,
    • in the subjective determination of the Selection Committee, have benefited from their participation in high school
      interscholastic athletic programs.
  • Minimum Qualifications: To qualify for the CCS JOYCE RIDGWAY, the applicant must meet or exceed all of the following minimum qualifications:
    • Be a graduating senior;
    • Possess no less than a 3.0 grade-point-average (over 7 semesters, un-weighted);
    • Have competed in at least 6 seasons of high school sports and at the VARSITY level for a CCS school for at least two (2) years;
    • 3 letters of reommendation, 1 from the Principal, 1 from a coach or athletic director and 1 from a community member;
    • Demonstrate leadership in school activities and or athletics, while demonstrating integrity and self sacrifice for teammates and athletic programs
  •  Evaluation Criteria and Process
    • The Selection Committee will evaluate the applications utilizing the following criteria:
      • Evaluation of self reflections in application
      • Evaluation of 3 letters of recommendation
      • Letters should include emphasis of applicants leadership qualities, high level of integrity, self sacrifice for team & peers
      • Athletic Participation/Achievement

    • The Selection Committee will then select one (1) JOYCE RIDGWAY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP recipient, utilizing, at its discretion, the results from the application and the letters of recommendation submitted.
    • The winner and their respective school administrator will be notified by the CCS Office Staff, and a press release will be prepared and distributed.
  • Presentation of Awards
    • The winner, along with their families, school Administrators and Athletic Directors, will be the guests of the Central Coast Section at an awards presentation, scheduled during the April 13, 2011 CCS Board of Managers meeting.  Each winner will receive an inscribed award.  Her respective monetary scholarship award will be forwarded to her high school, which will handle the appropriate disbursement of scholarship funds to and for the student.
  • Application Process

o                                Each member-school may submit any number of Joyce Rodgway applications to:
               CCS Office, 6830 Via Del Oro, Suite 103, San Jose, CA  95119

o                                The deadline for submitting completed applications is 3:30PM, TUESDAY  MARCH 1, 2011.
                Late
or incomplete applications will not be considered.

o                                In order to be considered complete, the application must include the following material:

§                                 A completed Joyce Ridgway Student Application Form

§                                 At least three (3) letters of recommendation  -- one (1) from the student's school Princial , one (1) from coach or athletic director and one (1) from a community member.

§                                 A copy of the student's seven(7)-semester transcript of grades, showing her cumulative and un-weighted grade-point-average and schedule of classes taken, with respective grades earned;
